Dollar Day$ of Summer - Week 5

Thanks for joining Cori from Rhythm and Bloom and I for week 5 of Dollar Day$ of Summer. You can check in each week on my blog or on our Facebook pages (Rhythm and Bloom and Lindsay's Kodaly Inpsired Classroom) to see what will be the dollar deal of the week. This is a great way to stock up for next and snag some great deals!

If you missed the excitement last week, when you visit my store, you will see a "Dollar Day$ of Summer" banner. If you click on the banner, you will see the item in my store that is discounted to $1 for that week!

You can find all the participating deals by visiting my blog every Sunday/Monday of the summer. I will have a linky party at the bottom of my blog post with links to all the $1 deals.

This week, my $1 deal is my connecting cultures bulletin board set.

My intention with this bulletin board set was that you would print the pages with the folk songs from countries around the world and display them around a world map. You could then take yarn tied to push pins to connect the folk song to its country of origin.

Here are some pictures of it in use in other classrooms.

Other teachers have simply used this set to expand their collection of folk songs from around the world. Either way, it's a great grab at only $1!

If you have already used this set (or use it in the future) I would love to see pictures. You can post them to my Facebook page, Lindsay's Kodaly Inspired Classroom or you can email them to me at LindsayJervis@hotmail.com

I use this with my preschool and kindergarten classes. It includes illustrations for the rhyme in full color, some color, and black and white. You could project these, print these, put the rhythm in order, etc.

It also includes some vocal exploration pathways, which I feel the rhyme really lends itself to.

I've also included options for the kids to draw their own on the board. Just project the pages and invite new students up to draw for each slide.

I've included the melody I know with the song, but I am not sure on a source or if it is even a folk song. It may just be a rhyme, but you can do whatever feels most authentic to you, sing or speak it!

This week, my $1 deal is my lines and spaces worksheet set. This worksheet set is not about name the lines (EGBDF) and spaces (FACE) but simply identifying whether a note is on a line or in a space. I feel that they help bridge an important gap that can be tricky for some kiddos and is often brushed over quickly by many music teachers.

Five Little Monkeys

A favorite book and fingerplay that I use with my pre-school and kindergarten kiddos is "Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed".

I found that Brittany De Laruelle has a really cute (and FREE) slide show to use with this fingerplay, and I pulled it out this year after we had read the book.

Five Little Monkeys - Visuals for Popular Folk Song

Which brings me to one of (hopefully) many summer projects: Easy DIY Monkey Stick Puppets.

When I say easy, I mean SUPER easy. I was walking through Hobby Lobby and found some pre-made little monkeys over in the craft aisle with wood, glass, etc. and they had a ton of pre-made animals, shapes, cars, princesses, you name it. These little guys were $0.67 each. I already had some bigger popsicle/small paint sticks at home. So for $3.35 + plus tax I created a set of monkey stick puppets. All I had to do was peel off the price sticker/plastic piece on the back and hot glue them to the stick. They will be great for my kiddos to take turns holding and bouncing to the steady beat of the rhyme and acting out as the rest of the class performs the fingerplay.

If you aren't familiar with it, you must check out "Five Little Monkeys Sitting in a Tree". Super fun for loud/soft, as the alligator sneaks ups quietly and then CHOMP grabs a monkey out of the tree!

This week, I am excited to post the first part of a brand new room theme (coming soon!). I have teamed up with my friend, Erin Johnson, to create a Space Themed Music Room Set. I went through high school, college, and all three levels of Kodaly with Erin. She used my nautical themed classroom decor set in her room last year and loved it. This year she attended my Digital Make It/Take It session with the Kodaly Music Educators of Kansas where I walked teachers through making a digital resource. We all made slides for Doggie, Doggie at the workshop. Erin really wanted to do a Space Theme for her music room this year, so we collaborated on this set:

We couldn't decide on font combinations and less/more ink printing options, so we've actually included five different designs total, but here are two of my favorites.

I think this is the set Erin plans on using in her room.

Here is another version that is a little more ink friendly by adding the white frame around it all:

Each rule has the same wording as all my other sets:
M- Make good choices
U- Use kind words
S- Show respect (I talk about how this includes to classmates, teacher, and the music that we perform)
I- Involve yourself
C- Care for room and instruments

Each rule also includes a song that can be printed or projected. These "rule songs" are set to familiar children's songs/folk songs. They get my kids singing from the first day and help my students to remember the rules. I can hmm the song for "Make Good Choices" and my kids will chime in and turn their behavior around!

Here's an example. This is for my "C" rule "Care for our Room and Instruments

I HOPE Erin will join me in the future for some more collaborative resources! We'll see if I can twist her arm! ;)

This first week of June, my $1 deal is my Low La Ready Set Print. There are lots of great songs in this set that can be used year round and a few specifically for fall, so I thought this might be one you would like to have in your arsenal before the school year starts so you can plan accordingly.

Low La {Ready Set Print!}
